Erin picked up her jacket from the stool where she’d left it and sat down. She looked over at Raymond, observing him closely for a long moment until he turned his head, meeting her eyes. Erin almost gasped at the intensity in the dark, chocolate-brown pools, her pulse beating rapidly. What the hell is wrong with me?

“I take it your friend is very protective of you.”

She heard something in his voice, a hint at an inside joke that only he could understand. It made her frown. “She is.”

“Good for you.” He took a sip of his drink.

“You’re a strange kind of guy, you know that?”

He raised his eyebrows. “How so?”

“The things you say, the way you say them—they’re not at all what one would expect a man to say.”

“And do you have a theory about that?”

Erin smirked. “You could be a feminist.”

“I’m not gonna deny that.”

She breathed a surprised laugh. “Really?”

“Why not? Feminism advocates equality between the sexes—all sexes. I think that’s a worthy goal.”

“All sexes? That’s an interesting side note. Are you trying to tell me something regarding your own sex?”

Raymond smiled. “Is that another theory you have about me? That I’m not a ‘real’ man? I’m sorry to disappoint, Erin. I’m very much a man—all parts.” He raised a challenging eyebrow.

Erin looked at him for a long moment. She reached for her beer, which had been standing on the bar the whole time—unattended. She pushed it away and hailed the barkeeper, ordered a fresh drink, and then turned back to Raymond. “I’m not interested in your parts.”

“I know, but you enjoy talking to me and I enjoy talking to you. Does it have to be complicated?”

“It is complicated.” Erin took a sip of her cold beer.

“Because you’re attracted to me.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement.

She looked at him, not so much surprised as irritated. Because he had said it. She didn’t respond. They sat in silence and drank from their respective glasses. Erin watched Raymond closely in the mirror above the bar, wondering for the nth time that night what it was about him that so completely captured her attention. He was just a guy, not even a really good-looking guy, if Mel was to be believed. He certainly was not conventionally handsome. There was a presence to him, though. It wasn’t like that of a movie star entering a room and turning every head, it was more understated. Maybe that of a teacher entering his classroom and pupils settling down because they respect him, because they value the knowledge he’s about to share with them.

Not good-looking, not in a conventional sense, Erin thought. But there were those captivating chocolate-brown eyes looking back at her. A strong face, with a pointy, little chin, even though his beard strove to obscure it. His lips—

“What do you say we go for a walk?” His voice sounded close to her ear.

Had he actually moved his head to whisper to her? How could she have missed it while she was staring at him? Erin blinked her eyes rapidly and turned her head.
